Bali, the home of Ruma Trip, is famous for its tropical climate, breathtaking nature, and deeply rooted culture. Located in Indonesia along the equator, Bali has become one of the most popular travel destinations in the world. Every year, more and more travelers choose the island for their holidays. While tourism once brought great opportunities for local communities, it has also led to a serious challenge: overtourism in Bali.
Today, this issue affects everyone—but the people who feel it the most are the locals themselves. Heavy traffic, water overconsumption, and overwhelming plastic waste have become part of daily life. On top of that, we are seeing more cases of cultural traditions being misunderstood or disrespected. As Balinese youth and the founders of Ruma Trip, it is painful for us to witness our home slowly being damaged by unchecked tourism, driven by greed and a system that prioritizes profit over people and nature.
In the past, tourism in Bali was closely connected to local values, traditions, and community ownership. That balance has shifted. Sustainability, the foundation of true Balinese life, has been pushed aside. Today, many local vendors struggle to survive as big investors with large capital dominate the market. Massive modern developments encourage mass consumption, replacing the traditional way of living in harmony with nature. The amount of waste produced by high-end tourism is unimaginable. With profits in focus, too many negative impacts are left for the island and its people to deal with.
We know that changing the tourism system in Bali won’t happen overnight, and it certainly can’t be done by one group alone. Creating a more sustainable and eco-friendly tourism industry requires awareness, responsibility, and collective effort—from travelers, businesses, and locals alike.
This is exactly why we created Ruma Trip. Our purposes are to design and offer more responsible ways to travel in Indonesia, specifically Bali and Lombok. We believe tourism can be comfortable, personal, and meaningful without harming the environment or local communities. At Ruma Trip, we design travel experiences that respect nature, support local people, and contribute to a more sustainable economy. By choosing to travel with us, you’re not just exploring—you’re helping protect the islands for the future.
